TOWN: Bethlehem at time of His Birth, about 5 B.C.

NOTE]  The Shepherds did come to see and worship the new born Baby Jesus on the night He was born. HOWEVER, the Magi from the East did NOT come that night, but some weeks or months later. It is more accurate to depict them coming later in the Postlude.

Some signs for us in the Town to

Here are suggestions for some signs which can be used in the Town section.

[NOTE]  The signs in this Town of 5 B.C., are written in the present tense as if written by individuals at that time. This gives a “current flavor” to your display so your guests will become more acquainted with issues of concern to people of that time.   A few signs are marked to appear to be graffiti and hand made rather informally.

A sign at the entrance to the TOWN can explain the use of 5 B.C. as a date.

WHY 5 B.C.?  In or about the year A.D.  525, a monk in Rome calculated the times when Easters came and also calculated the year of the Conception of Jesus Christ to have been 525 years before the time when he was working on his calculations. However, the information available to him was not exactly correct, nor complete. So his calculations were off by about one percent. We know now that that King Herod probably died in 4 B.C. The Magi came after the Birth of Jesus, but before Herod died. So Jesus was probably born in 5 or perhaps 4 B.C.  The monk was Dionysius Exiguus
  (Dennis the Little or Dennis the Short, meaning" humble"). He lived about 470 – 544.

For certain careful uses in the Town section  Greek may be useful.

If there is someone available who has some familiarity with the language (or at least with the alphabet of the language), you might receive some assistance from such person. A member of the clergy or a professor could help you.

(Display & 3 Signs)  NOTE: This is a good illustration of clean and unclean water jugs and gives us thoughts on the contrast. Display three large water jugs, all the same size, made of pottery, without glaze or artificial coloring.  Have them near each other or even with the bases fitted into a large thick wooden board (as archaeologists have found) or insert the bases slightly into the soil or have each jug braced between three rocks.

-The first jug on one side is labeled “Clean fresh water daily for drinking and cooking. Please keep this vessel Clean!”

- The jug in the middle is labeled  “Water in this older jug is NOT clean enough for drinking or cooking. This water is for bathing, washing clothing and for the animals.”

- The third jug is labeled, “Toilet jug. Some time ago this was a clean jug, but it was not frequently scrubbed out and kept clean.”

(sign pointing north-west)  To the well, near our Town Gate, from which 3 mighty men of King David took water when our Town was an army garrison of our ancient enemies, the Philistines, about 1,000 years ago.  However, David refused to drink the water because the mighty men had fought and risked their lives to get the water as a surprise gift for David from this his hometown. David gave the water as a gift to the LORD. (2 Samuel 23:13-17)

 (Sign)  “Welcome to the ‘House of Bread, that is Beth Lehem.
Our fields are fertile and provide the grain to make much bread
to feed thousands of people.”

(adjacent sign)  Moses wrote, "He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD.”  (Deut. 8:3 NASB)

“Our Prophet Isaiah wrote a message from God more than 700 years ago,

‘For a child will be born to us,

a son will be given to us;
And the Government will rest on His shoulders;
And His Name will be called Wonderful Counselor,

Mighty God,
Father of Eternity,

Prince of Peace.
There will be no end to the increase of His Government or of peace,
On the throne of David and over his kingdom,
To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness
From then on and forevermore.
The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.’”

    (Isaiah 9:6-7)

 (Potter’s booth and 3 signs) (NOTE  Some friend may actually be an amateur potter and be able to show and demonstrate the techniques. Some broken pieces of pottery should be available and clearly marked “potshsherds” to relate to the verse in Isaiah 45:9)

1.  “But now, O LORD You are our Father,
We are the  clay, and You are our potter;
And all of us are the  )work of Your hand.”  (
Isaiah 64:8)

2.  "Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker, to him who is but a potsherd among the potsherds on the ground. Does the clay say to the potter, 'What are you making?' Does your work say, 'He has no hands'?”  (Isaiah 45:9)

3.   "Can I not, O house of Israel, deal with you as this potter does?" declares the LORD. "Behold, like the clay in the potter's hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel.” (Jeremiah 18:6)
